2002 Annual Report Executive Summary
McDowell County Enterprise Community
A CHALLENGE; A VISION; A LEGACY
The
McDowell County Action Network celebrated its 8th Anniversary this year. McCAN
was incorporated in 1994, as a precursor to Enterprise Community designation,
with an initial $2.95 million grant from the United States Department of
Agriculture and funding from several other sources. Its original mandate, which
holds true to this day, was to resurrect McDowell County to its highest economic
and social potential. Today, as the most diverse, independent, private,
non-profit economic development agency in Southern West Virginia, McCAN
continues to implement this philosophy of self-help through a decentralized,
neighborhood-based structure and a process that provides innovative, practical
and timely programs and services which emphasize physical and human
infrastructure development at all levels and develop problem-solving skills for
people and neighborhoods. From public transportation to flood recovery efforts
to housing initiatives, the activities described in this report are reflective
of the opportunities for McDowell Countians to improve their lives, creating a
significant return on investment for funding sources and society.
