Scott-McCreary Enterprise Community

The rural EZ/EC Initiative that was created to better serve the impoverished rural citizens has been a success in the Scott/McCreary Area Revitalization Team (SMART) area. The following is a summary of major activities occurring in Scott County for the year ending December 31, 2002. 

The highlights of this year’s activities include: 

1) Scott County received funding in the amount of $500,000 to assist with infrastructure improvements in the Robbins community. 

2) The Scott County Sheriff’s Department was awarded a $193,329 “COPS in Schools” grant. 

3) The new Boys and Girls Club program began in August. 

4) The Cancer Treatment Center was constructed and is now open. 

5) Trakker Trailers, a company which manufactures cargo trailers, opened in Scott County. 

6) Dedication was held for two new Housing Opportunities and People Enterprise (H.O.P.E.) homes. The $350,000 project was designed to provide assisted living opportunities for severely handicapped residents of Scott County. 

7) Funds were received for upgrading the Oneida Volunteer Fire Department. 

8) Construction of a spec building for the development of small and emerging businesses was completed in the Airport Industrial Park. The facility is being used by QCB, Inc., a business that refurbishes cell phone batteries.

 9) FAITH on Wheels (Feeding, Aiding, and Improving the Homebound) began providing meals for the homebound senior citizens in Scott County. 

10) Scott County received a $71,200 federal grant for the first of scheduled three-year grant funded initiative to implement a countywide recreation program. 

11) Construction has begun on a new gymnasium at Huntsville Middle School. The project will be financed with Quality Zone Academy Bonds (QZAB). 

12) Construction is nearly completed for a new 20-unit multi-family housing development. The low-income family housing complex is made possible through a $998,571 loan from the U.S.D.A. Rural Development and other sources. 

13) The ETEP School-to-Work Program instituted a work skills/job shadowing curriculum in the two local high schools. 

14) Continued support of local entrepreneurs through the Intermediary Relending Program in both Scott and McCreary County. 

15) Joint Training Sessions for the SMART Board of Directors were held in McCreary County.
