The rural EZ/EC Initiative that was created to better serve the impoverished rural citizens has been a success in the Scott/McCreary Area Revitalization Team (SMART) area. The following is a summary of major activities occurring in Scott County for the year ending December 31, 2003. Each activity addresses a task, goal or objective of a benchmark and all of the activities were initiated by the SMART Enterprise Community.
The highlights of this year’s activities include:
1) The Boys and
Girls Club has purchased property and is in the process of raising $3.5 million
to build a new facility. Currently have nine fulltime employees.
2) Trakker
Trailers purchased spec building and is currently undergoing an expansion.
3)
Housing Opportunities and People Enterprise (HOPE) announced the construction of
two additional assisted living home.
4) The expansion of the existing spec
building in the Airport Industrial Park has been completed.
5) Construction of
the gymnasium at Huntsville Middle School has been completed.
6) Sewer
lines/plant for the Airport Industrial Park.
7) EDA Grant for sewer expansion in
Oneida.
8) DHS expansion to existing building.
9) Contracts to be let for
construction of new bridges at Burnt Mill Ford and Buffalo Creek.
10) East
Tennessee Trailer is in the process of building new plant in the Winfield
Industrial Park.
11) Continued support of local entrepreneurs through the
Intermediary Relending Program in both Scott and McCreary County.
12) Scott
County has purchased a GIS system.
13) Phase II Wireless for E-911 is in place.
14) Scott County is in process of expanding Scott County One-Stop Shop.
15) Boat
Ramp is being constructed on New River.
16) Old Capital Hill School has been
refurbished to include 6 apartments for homeless and a storage/warehouse for
county.
17) An emergency food pantry was opened at the old Straight Fork School.
18) County has purchased new recycling bins.
19) Scott County is completing the
construction of a Tourist Welcome Center.
20) Scott County purchased 32 acres to
construct new Winfield School.
21) Construction is near completion for a new
Imaging Center and Assisted Living Center in Oneida.
22) Takahati Seiko, a
manufacturer of auto parts, has now opened and in production in the Helenwood
Industrial Park.
23) Grant has been submitted for a VISTA worker to do tourism
surveys.
24) Extension project for the Scott County Airport is currently
underway.
25) Construction is near completion of the Tim Smith Medical Center.
26) Mountain Peoples Health Council has completed construction of two new health
facilities (Elgin and Oneida).
27) Construction of new football field at
Burchfield School complete.
28) Scott County Museum is now completed and is open
to the public.
29) Sewer expansion to the Fairview community is under
construction.
30) FAITH on Wheels (Feeding, Aiding, and Improving the Homebound)
continues to provide meals for the homebound senior citizens in Scott County.
31) Scott County received a grant to hire a Marketing Director.
32) ARC grant
for CASA Children’s Center.
33) Construction of new roof on Juvenile Detention
Center.
34) Metal Detectors installed in Courthouse.
35) Scott County has
purchased new computerized voting machines.
36) Remote Area Medical has a
scheduled visit in 2003 and a second visit is scheduled for February 2004.
37)
Construction of drainage project in the Airport Industrial Park
38) The
construction of “Lord’s Gym” has been completed in McCreary County.
39) Scott
County purchased 7 new school buses.
40) Construction of the new Huntsville
Utility District Water Impoundment Lake is completed.
